Personal Support Worker By Administration

The right personal support worker should meet a client’s practical care needs while also respecting their personality, routines, culture, and independence.

Start by identifying the support required. This may include assistance with dressing, grooming, mobility, meal preparation, medication reminders, light housekeeping, companionship, or respite for family caregivers.

Ask the provider how workers are screened, trained, supervised, and matched with clients. Families should also understand how caregiver absences, schedule changes, emergencies, and concerns are handled.

Compatibility matters. During an initial meeting, observe whether the worker listens carefully, communicates clearly, and speaks directly to the person receiving care. The client should feel included in decisions rather than discussed as though they are not present.

Families should share important routines, preferences, mobility considerations, and communication needs. A written care plan can clarify responsibilities and establish consistent expectations.

Selecting a PSW is about more than availability. A strong match is built on competence, reliability, trust, dignity, and respectful communication.
